A Look Inside the Fishbowl
I have tried to join the “real world”; that 9-5, on the grid, career-world with a predictable progression of success and promotion. I have tried, really hard. I’ve worked retail. I’ve been a learning coach for college students with disabilities. I’ve taught high school. I even seriously considered getting a third degree and becoming a lawyer. It’s just not who I am.
My passion is the arts. Even when I was working a “real” job I needed an artistic outlet, whether that was pr marketing for musicians, web design, or modeling for life drawing art classes, I needed to be creative. I’m not happy unless I’m expressing what’s inside in some artistic form.
What I do is very real, I dare say considerably more real that all those “real world” jobs. In my world we call them Joe Jobs. And I am not Joe.
I am an actor. I am a writer. I am a photographer. I am the artistic director of a small theatre company.
And no, I will not choose just one thing to put on my business card. Would my life be simpler if I chose one career to pursue? Probably. Would it be as fulfilling? I don’t want to have to find out.
I won’t limit this blog to being about one thing. Here I will share, I will rant, I will offer advice, and I will indulge my whims. Welcome to my real world.
